River expedition to Chutes Ángel

from Kavac to Canaima, sailing the rivers Akanán, Carrao and Churún

DAY 1

Meeting point at the airport of Ciudad Bolívar where we will board our charter plane, a small Cessna 206 to fly to Kavac, small Indian community located on the Southeast flank of Auyantepuy. We spend the day exploring the famous canyon of Kavac, where one has to swim through a little canyon to reach a nice 20 meters (65 feet) waterfall. We will spend the night in hammocks and mosquito nets in the community.

DAY 2

After breakfast, a 30 minutes walk to the waterfall Toma de Agua, for a little swim, while our crew prepare food and equipment for our river expedition. Back from the fall, a short ride in 4x4 to reach Kamarata, another Indian community, where we board a motorized curiara (Indian made dugout canoe) and sail the Akanán River. We stop at around 4:30 at Ibanameru where we will have dinner and spend the night in hammocks.

DAY 3

After a hearty breakfast, we continue our way to Campo Carrao, where we can observe the remains of a DC-3 that made an emergency landing years ago... further on, we leave the Akanán River for the Carrao, we will have lunch at Kuay and at 4 o'clock will reach Arenal where we will spend the night in hammocks like the previous nights.

DAY 4

Sailing first the Carrao River and then upriver the Churún into the Devil's canyon, in order to reach the island Ratoncito, where we leave the curiara and continue walking up to the base of Angel Falls. Then back on the Churún, and to the campsite Arenal where we will spend another night.

DAY 5

Down the Carrao again to the waterfall El Sapo, where we can walk behind the curtain of water and then Canaima, our final destination. We spend the last night in Canaima in a comfortable rustic lodge, (without A/C but with private bathroom) for a well deserved rest.
